World Cup: Portugal plays in a frenzy – and in the quarterfinals – Sport

The team of coach Fernando Santos wins with maximum sovereignty, Switzerland literally goes under. Man of the match is not Cristiano Ronaldo, but his substitute in the starting XI, who scored three times.

It was a veritable demonstration: Portugal defeated Switzerland in the round of 16 of the World Cup in Qatar, 5-1. The Swiss had little or nothing to oppose coach Fernando Santos’ team for long stretches. Especially at the beginning of the second half, the Portuguese played so confidently that there was soon no doubt that this team would reach the quarter-finals.

For once, man of the match was not Cristiano Ronaldo. He wasn’t even in the starting XI, Santos initially left him on the bench. Instead, Goncalo Ramos moved to the striker position – and recommended himself with his performance for further assignments. He put the Portuguese in the lead (17th), made it 3-0 after half-time (51st) and finally made everything clear with his goal to make it 5-1 (67th). In the meantime, Pepe (33′) and Raphael Guerreiro (55′) also scored for Portugal, and Rafael Leao even made it 6-1 (90+2) in injury time. The interim 4:1 goal by Arkanji (58th) did not cause any unrest among the Portuguese. At no time was victory really in jeopardy.

Portugal coach Santos then brought on Cristiano Ronaldo for the last quarter of an hour, who was greeted with frenetic applause and shouts from the stadium crowd. His first ball contacts were also celebrated, his actions were also dangerous. However, he only hit the goal from an offside position, and the Swiss were able to thwart all further attacks by the star striker. And you could tell: Cristiano Ronaldo wasn’t really happy with this performance.
