Will Ukraine get even better German artillery?

DThe federal government is said to be ready to Ukraine to be supported with other artillery systems. At least that's what the "Welt am Sonntag" reports citing documents available to the editor. Accordingly, there should be 18 artillery systems of the RCH 155 type. Behind the cryptic abbreviation is the most modern howitzer from the armaments company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW). It was only in August 2021 that the company presented it "in sharp focus" for the first time.

The RCH 155 is a further development of the Panzerhaubitze 2000, 18 of which are already available from the armed forces and the Dutch forces were given to the Ukrainians. This corresponds to the number needed to fully equip an artillery battalion. The Ukrainians have been using the self-propelled howitzer for months, most recently in their extremely successful attacks on the Eastern Front, south-east of Kharkiv. It is said from Bundeswehr circles that they praised them as the best system available to them.

Opposite her is the RCH 155 according to the manufacturer's information among other things, be able to shoot further. The combat distance of the 155 millimeter gun is therefore up to 54 kilometers instead of up to 40 with range-enhanced ammunition for the Panzerhaubitze 2000. In addition, it should be lighter and protect the crew better against enemy fire - a weak point that howitzers in general battle tanks differentiate.

According to the newspaper, the request for the delivery of the RCH 155 should be submitted by the Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Resnikov to his German counterpart in mid-July Christina Lambrecht have asked.

The Ukrainian Ambassador Andriy Melnyk told the "Welt am Sonntag" on Friday that the German side is now ready to deliver the weapons. This will "make a major contribution to massively strengthening the clout of the Ukrainian army". There was no confirmation from the German side on Saturday. On the government side, where Germany's pending and completed military assistance to Ukraine is recorded, it was not recorded. Spokespersons for the Ministry of Defense and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection did not want to comment on the process on Saturday morning to the FAZ.
