The Vienna people police is on alert due to a terrorist threat in the Austrian capital. “The Directorate of State Security & Intelligence received information that an Islamist-motivated attack is planned in Vienna,” the police said on Twitter. The threat affects church institutions.
The presence of patrol officers and anti-terrorist units in the city area has been increased. Neuralgic places and objects in Vienna would be monitored more closely, the police wrote. How long the increased protection will last cannot yet be estimated. If there is a specific danger to the population at a specific location, the police will warn “immediately via all available channels”.
In November 2020, a convicted sympathizer of the terrorist militia Islamic State shot four passers-by in Vienna city center and injured 23 people, some seriously. In the course of processing the attack, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution was reformed.
