USA doubts going it alone with controversial climate foundation

Berlin, Brussels After the dispute over the supply of main battle tanks to the Ukraine the next controversy erupts in the transatlantic relationship. The topic is the controversial foundation “Climate and Environmental Protection MV”, which is responsible for the construction of the Baltic Sea pipeline North Stream 2 served and will also occupy the Bundestag this week.

The official representation of Germany so far is: The state government Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) founded the Climate Foundation on her own initiative. But the US government does not believe this is credible, as insiders report to the Handelsblatt.

Before the Russian attack on Ukraine, the climate foundation was also considered by the German government to be an “appropriate” instrument to ward off US sanctions, says a diplomat who is familiar with the talks between the Americans and Berlin at the time. The foundation was founded by the government of the ex-Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) “at least tolerated”.
