Taipei Two US warships crossed the Taiwan Strait on Sunday. As the US Navy’s 7th Fleet said on Twitter, the operation of the guided missile cruisers USS Antietam and USS Chancellorsville demonstrates “the United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.”

Warships from the United States and from allies such as Britain and Canada have repeatedly sailed through the Taiwan Strait in recent years, drawing the wrath of Chinese leaders in Beijing.

At the beginning of August, the President of the US House of Representatives visited Taiwan. The US does not maintain official diplomatic relations with Taiwan, but has a legal obligation to provide Taiwan with the means of self-defense.
Shortly after Pelosi’s visit, another delegation of five US congressmen traveled to the island. The US stressed that visits by US members of Congress were not uncommon and consistent with the US One China policy.
