Two games, two wins: Dennis Schröder is back with the LA Lakers – Sport

The basketball pro Dennis Schröder can claim something for himself that his team is denied: a successful start to the season. Thank the thumb. The point guard has played twice so far, and the Lakers have won twice. Schröder missed the first 13 games due to a thumb injury including surgery, so he cannot be used for the miserable starting record of 3:10 wins, with him the Lakers have looked better again recently. And this despite the fact that their top player LeBron James had to watch from the bench because of an adductor injury.

Nevertheless, LA remains third from bottom in the Western Conference, only the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets are even worse. The fight for the championship? No problem, first of all it’s about not losing sight of the playoff places. Especially since the traditional club has not lived up to its caliber and its demands in the past two seasons. After the 2020 championship, the 17th in the club’s glorious history, which made the Lakers record champions along with the Boston Celtics, the team is off the roll. A year ago it was over in the first playoff round, last season even after the main round. What resulted in a high turnover of players, before this season master coach Frank Vogel was also dismissed.

The new coach knows Schröder from their time together in Atlanta, he found his performance at the European Championship “incredible”

In his place, Darvin Ham is supposed to get the team back on the road to success in his world-famous yellow and purple jerseys, which initially went haywire. Now Schröder should bring stability. The head coach and the player know each other from their time together with the Atlanta Hawks, where Ham, as an assistant coach, accompanied the rise of the young playmaker, who moved overseas from Braunschweig.

On his debut after a long injury break, Ham sent the 29-year-old guard onto the floor for almost 15 minutes, Schröder remained largely inconspicuous offensively and scored two points. Against the Spurs two days later, he already collected 13 points in just under 23 minutes, set accents, the clear upward trend was unmistakable. Especially since the captain of the German national team is an effective defender, others are responsible for the show in the team: In addition to James, the center is Anthony Davis or Russel Westbrook, but the playmaker has hardly been able to convince like in the previous season.

Nevertheless, Schröder, who rarely suspects excessive modesty, already formulated bold goals after his second game: “Of course we want to create something big here, the coach also knows that he needs me for this.” Of course Davis, James and Westbrook would also be needed for better times, the 29-year-old admitted German press agency on record. “When you play in the NBA, of course you want to get a ring. That’s my goal this year.”

Of course, after the achievements of the recent past, Schröder can also allow himself this self-confidence. At the home European Championships, in addition to his individual class, he showed leadership qualities on and off the field, which brought him a new engagement after his rather messed-up season a year ago in the Lakers dress. At the European Championships at home, Schröder withstood the pressure, met the high expectations and led Germany to bronze. What his new coach had not lost sight of, Ham attested him “achievements that were nothing short of incredible”.

Perhaps Schröder will also go to Europe, we’ll see. Now he thinks from day to day

Above all, the hitherto miserable throwing rates of the guards should improve with Schröder on the field. In addition to his strong defensive work, he knows how to steer a game and give it pace, and he is also a reliable scorer. And in a one-on-one game, he’s still tough to keep. What he is well aware of: “Everyone knows what I stand for. I don’t have to prove anything, nothing, zero. Everyone who plays against me here knows who I am,” he said after his appealing performance in the game against the Spurs, from now on he will show “what I stand for and what I bring”.

His contract in the City of Angels only runs until the end of the season, and there is currently a lot to be said for the 29-year-old. As is well known, the first engagement a year ago was not extended, he went to the Boston Celtics, who traded him to the Houston Rockets. At the time, Schröder turned down a four-year offer for $84 million, US broadcaster ESPN reported. The international has contradicted this version after a long silence, the club has not commented. Forget everything, says Schröder now, from now on he can collect arguments for a rosy future in yellow-purple.

But he doesn’t think too much about it, as he said: “I don’t know myself how long I’ll be playing here. I always said until 35.” But he could also imagine a future “in Europe”, “maybe I’ll play in my own club” – Schröder is the sole shareholder of the Bundesliga club Löwen Braunschweig. He wants to keep everything open, he thinks from day to day.
