Dhe new British Prime Minister Liz Truss is apparently considering moving the British Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Truss informed Israeli Prime Minister Jair Lapid about the review on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, a spokeswoman said on Thursday night. Lapid thanked Twitter for considering moving the embassy. Truss is a true friend of Israel. "Together we will make the alliance between Britain and Israel even stronger," Lapid wrote.
The relocation of embassies to Jerusalem is controversial. According to the majority of the international community, the status of Jerusalem should only be determined in future peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital, the Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital for their own Palestinian state.
In a historic solo effort, former US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel in 2017. Then, in May 2018, the United States moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Both steps were sharply criticized internationally and above all by the Palestinians. Honduras, Guatemala and Kosovo now also have their embassies in Jerusalem.
