Do you feel the same? Crisis followed crisis in 2022, the Germans are under more strain than they have been for a long time. You can’t talk away this exhaustion – but you don’t have to despair of it either.
“So how are you?” In a year in which one crisis follows the next, the non-binding standard answer to this phrase has become rare. Not because of: “Thank you, good!” Who is still doing well? “The situation is just as it is,” says a circle of acquaintances. Or: “It’s really a lot at the moment.”
When the attack on Ukraine began in February and with it a war in Europe that hardly anyone would have thought possible, the shock also hit a battered population in Germany. Two years of pandemic had taken away from people what makes them inside: togetherness, freedom, touch. In addition – at least for long stretches – structure, order, the usual everyday life. The need for normality was great. Instead: bombs on Ukraine.
