What sounds like a joke was meant seriously by those affected in the 19th century. The phenomenon can be found in older British and American specialist journals. But a tooth cannot explode. So what?

It must sound like a nightmare for anyone who breaks out in a cold sweat over the sounds of drilling in the dentist's office, memories of wisdom tooth surgery or the upcoming root canal treatment. There are said to have been people whose teeth exploded. At least that's what a handful of dentists said who remembered that in 1965 British Dental Journal turned and tried to discuss four curious cases. Some of these cases begin with pain. All end in a fracture, if the reports are to be believed. What happened in between is a mystery.
