The EU wants to free itself from dependence on China

Brussels EU Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton has promised to end the “era of naivety”. For years, the Frenchman has been warning that Europe is too economically vulnerable to survive in the new world of rival powers and economic blocs. The EU must learn the “geopolitics of supply chains”, says Breton. The EU should therefore become less susceptible to blackmail.

Breton can feel vindicated by the Russian war of aggression against the Ukraine. The German energy partnership with Russia turned out to be a trap, and the economy has now also recognized this. While corporations and the federal government are trying with all their might to escape dependence on Russian fossil energy, Breton is already preparing the next major project.
