The future of the anti-superhero seems in danger: “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” started disappointingly in the cinemas.
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” got off to a weak start in North America. On its first weekend, the superhero comedy played in the United States and Canada according to “Deadline” only 30.5 million US dollars (about 28.4 million euros). The sequel starts even weaker than the already cautious forecast. In the run-up, a low 35 million dollars (about 32 million euros) was expected at the start.
Even outside of its regular market, “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” got disappointing numbers at the start. Worldwide there are currently only 65.5 million dollars (about 61 million euros) to book. The forecasts were 85 million dollars (about 79 million euros). In Germany, “Shazam 2” started in cinemas on March 16th.
Significantly weaker than the forerunner
“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” falls well short of its predecessor. “Shazam!” was in 2019 North America started with a gross of 53 million US dollars (about 49 million euros).
A third part of the character played by Zachary Levi (42) seems to be in danger. Levi had said in advancethat he would like to appear again as a teenager in the body of an adult superhero. But he made this dependent on the reactions of the audience to part two.
