Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” is the play of the hour – culture

“Macbeth”, Shakespeare’s shortest and darkest play, is seldom seen as full of characters and bombastic as it is now at the Staatsschauspiel Dresden. Unless in the opera, where the material also occurs, set to music by Giuseppe Verdi, who has Shakespeare’s three witches sung in choral strength. In any case, the Dresden production is reminiscent of an opera, albeit in terms of rock and multimedia. The multi-talented actor Christian Friedel, here at work as the light showering main actor, director, composer and singer in personal union, makes with the participation of his band Woods of Birnam and a group of twenty dancers from Shakespeare’s bloody tragedy, a Grusical with a bang. A musically grounded horror fairy tale with aesthetic borrowings from Robert Wilson, in which a lot is offered visually and atmospherically. In terms of video, light and sound technology, it is so impressive that it can easily keep up with the stage shows of big pop stars – and in the end it causes cheers.
