Berlin CDU leader Friedrich Merz has asked Chancellor Olaf Scholz to make a quick decision on the successor to Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht. “With this wabern you harm the Bundeswehr,” said Merz on Saturday in Weimar after the closed meeting of the CDU federal executive board. According to information from Reuters and other media, Lambrecht wants to announce her resignation on Monday. She was overwhelmed with the task from the start, said Merz.

According to Reuters information from the SPD, Lambrecht had already made the decision last year to resign in the first half of 2023. The defense minister had the impression that her messages were no longer getting through.

She doesn’t want to be a burden, Lambrecht made it clear in talks with the Chancellor and the SPD leadership, among others. “There were several talks with Scholz, who wanted to keep her on board.” Lambrecht wanted to make a self-determined decision. Recently there had been a debate about her New Year’s Eve video.

With a view to the upcoming decision on further arms deliveries from the Western Allies to Ukraine at the so-called Ramstein meeting on January 20, the deputy CDU/CSU parliamentary group leader Johann Wadephul told Reuters: “The Chancellor has held on to it for too long and must Get rid of uncertainty now. Germany cannot afford to have command and command on call.”
