RKI registers 46,787 new infections – incidence at 204.2

Berlin The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the nationwide seven-day incidence on Tuesday morning as 204.2. This is evident from numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard at 5 a.m. The day before, the value of new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week was 195.1 (previous week: 190.6; previous month: 269.2). However, this information only provides a very incomplete picture of the number of infections. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations and transmission problems can lead to the distortion of individual daily values.
The health authorities in Germany recently reported 46,787 new corona infections (previous week: 46,552) and 188 deaths (previous week: 162) to the RKI within one day. Here, too, comparisons of the data are only possible to a limited extent due to the test behavior, late registrations and transmission problems. In general, the number of registered new infections and deaths varies significantly from weekday to weekday, since many federal states do not transmit them to the RKI, especially at weekends, and report their cases later in the week.
The RKI has counted 36,604,648 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected.

What is the RKI?
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is an independent higher federal authority. It is a public health care institution and monitors the health of the entire population of Germany. Another central area of the RKI is research, the institute is considered the central research facility of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Since March 1, 2015, the President of the Robert Koch Institute has been Lothar H. Wieler, who has increasingly been the focus of reporting since the outbreak of the corona pandemic in Germany.
How does the RKI get the current corona numbers?
The Robert Koch Institute continuously records the current Covid-19 situation. It evaluates all information based on current surveys and assesses the risk for the population in Germany. The RKI regularly announces the current number of corona cases in Germany.
The health authorities receive figures on new infections, recoveries or deaths from all over Germany and transmit them to the RKI. The authorities have to adhere to strict rules.
Covid-19 cases that meet the case definition of the RKI must be transmitted electronically by the responsible health authority to the responsible state authority no later than the next working day.
From there, the information must be sent to the RKI no later than the next working day. This data must not contain the name, place of residence or contact details of the person concerned.
What does the hospitalization rate mean?
The number, also known as the hospitalization incidence, shows how many corona patients per 100,000 inhabitants were admitted to clinics within seven days. It is an important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions. However, there is no nationwide threshold as to when the situation can be seen as critical. The reason for this is that the hospitalization incidence has too large regional differences.
In October the value was 1.9. The previous high was around Christmas time at around 15.5. It must be taken into account here that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with a delay.
