Production of wine and must increased by six percent last year

DThanks to favorable weather conditions, German winegrowers can look back on a good yield last year: they produced 8.94 million hectoliters in Germany in 2022 Wine and Most, as the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced on Monday. That was around half a million hectoliters or six percent more than in the previous year. Compared to the average for the years 2016 to 2021, 3.5 percent more wine and must were produced.
The grapes benefited from favorable weather conditions. The long dry period in summer led to losses in young plants and in areas where there was insufficient irrigation; older vines coped well with it. At the same time, the drought led to comparatively little fungal infestation, and there were no late frosts and major hailstorms. It also rained heavily shortly before the harvest, which also had a positive effect, as the statisticians emphasized.
Of the wines produced, 66 percent were white and 34 percent were red – including rosé and rott. Overall, more Prädikatswein was produced. The share was 21 percent last year, compared to 15 percent the year before. The two largest wine-growing regions, Rheinhessen and Pfalz, together produced almost half of the volume of wine.
