“We boys have to take back the world” – that’s what Emil Dreesen (Jonathan Berlin) believes after his return from the First World War. He wants to put trauma from the trenches and a heavy guilt behind him. Unlike his nationalist father Fritz (Benjamin Sadler), who rebelled against the French occupiers in his Rheinhotel Dreesen, the hotelier’s son Emil wants to come to terms with the French and reconcile. The junior boss is looking ahead: In order to attract new guests, the 21-year-old, with the support of his younger sister Ulla (Pauline Rénevier), relies on culture and entertainment.
