It’s been rumored for a long time, now it’s confirmed: The NFL will play two games in Germany in 2023. Two teams have already been determined.

It’s the message that football fans look to Germany have been waiting for: Instead of one game, there will be two NFL games on German soil in 2023. The NFL confirmed the rumors in a tweet on Thursday. “How awesome: there will be two games in Germany in 2023,” says the German-language account of the NFL. The first two teams are also certain: The New England Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs around superstar Patrick Mahomes will play in Germany, but not against each other – both teams had secured marketing rights for the German area two years ago.

Germany benefits from problems in awarding the second game Mexico. An international game should also be played there in the Aztec Stadium this year. However, since the stadium is being rebuilt for the next World Cup, it will not be possible to play there this year.

NFL sends Chiefs and Patriots to Germany

It is not yet clear where the games will take place. When initially four games were awarded to Germany, the NFL last year Munich and Frankfurt were named as annually changing venues. After the first game on German soil between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Seattle Seahawks was played in Munich in November 2022, it would be Frankfurt’s turn this year. Whether this also applies to both games is currently still open, as are the game dates and the opponents of the Patriots and Chiefs. It should be certain that the Buffalo Bills, the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Tennessee Titans will not make their way to Germany. Both clubs will play in the International Series in London in autumn 2023. “The Chiefs and Patriots are both legendary teams in the NFL with some of the most outstanding athletes in the world, and we’re excited to welcome them to Germany this year,” said NFL Germany boss Alexander Steinforth in a statement from the NFL.

The German fans will also hope for a better distribution of the cards. According to Steinforth, three million tickets could have been sold for the game in Munich last year. The tickets were sold out within minutes, and many fans looked down the drain. Fans who want to buy tickets this year must register in advance at a register your own page of the NFL. Both Germany games will also be shown on RTL. The TV broadcaster has secured the broadcasting rights for the NFL from the coming season.

The teams from Kansas City and Foxborough (home of the Patriots) are already looking forward to the event in Germany. “We know some of our most passionate fans live in Germany and we’re excited to finally play a game there. We know the fans will create a great atmosphere,” said Robert Kraft, Patriots chairman and CEO. The German fans left a lasting impression on the American guests at the first NFL game in Munich. After the game, superstar Tom Brady raved about one of the most incredible atmospheres he’s ever experienced. And American TV commentators and media representatives were also speechless.
