In Ecuador is a the eve of local elections murdered candidate has been elected mayor of his city. As the electoral commission of the South American country announced on Tuesday, Omar Menéndez from the left-wing Citizens’ Revolution received a good 46 percent of the votes in the elections in the coastal town of Puerto López on Sunday. Second-placed Javier Pincay only got a good 21 percent.

The 41-year-old Menéndez was shot dead on Sunday night, just a few hours before voting began. According to Ecuadorian electoral law, his party, the ex-President Rafael Correa close to replacing him with another candidate.

The election campaign before the local elections in Ecuador had been overshadowed by violence. A mayoral candidate had already been killed in another coastal town two weeks ago.
