Malaika Mihambo: EM start uncertain after corona infection

Wjump star Malaika Mihambo (28) was infected with the corona virus after Eugene’s World Cup triumph and is worried about her start at the upcoming home European Championships in athletics in Munich (15th to 21st August). After the end of her quarantine, the defending champion traveled to the German team’s training camp in Erding this Tuesday. Mihambo wants to make a short-term decision about her start after her training deficit.

“I got infected with Corona after the World Cup. It was a mild course, but I felt tired and listless and didn’t train for ten days,” said Mihambo: “Unfortunately, the quarantine and the symptoms made optimal preparation for the competition impossible. Today I did a light strength training session for the first time after the medical check-up. However, my last real training session was before the World Cup. That was quite a while ago and you noticed that in training.”

Mihambo: “I wanted to show that I can jump further”

the long jump-Qualification is on August 16, with the final two days later. “I was so looking forward to the European Championships, I was in great shape and wanted to show at the European Championships that I can jump even further this year than in Eugene,” said the Olympic champion, who won her title at the World Championships with a score of 7.12 Meter had defended: “Despite the forced break and the training backlog, I will try to start and do my best, knowing full well that I will probably not be able to build on my level of performance from Eugene.”

Should Mihambo, who has been unbeaten at major outdoor events since her EM triumph in Berlin in 2018, fail, it would be a painful loss for the recently badly battered German athletics team. In Eugene only Germany’s Sportswoman of the Year and the women’s sprint relay had won medals.
