LNG terminals – investigations before Rügen – economy

The first work has started in the Baltic Sea for the planned construction of two more terminals for liquefied natural gas (LNG) east of Rügen. A spokesman for the energy company RWE said on Sunday that it was “merely exploratory work” that had been approved by the Baltic Sea Waterways and Shipping Authority. The work is taking place as part of the “Baltic Sea LNG” project, which is being implemented by RWE as a service provider on behalf of the federal government. Two special ships are used for the exploration work. “It is customary for offshore projects to be carefully examined in advance of the condition of the ground and the subsoil. This also includes checking for old World War II ammunition that may still be lying in the ground,” the statement said. In the bathing resorts on Rügen, there is growing concern that two large terminals for the acceptance of natural gas delivered with LNG tankers are being built just a few kilometers from the beaches in Binz, Sellin and Göhren, which could damage tourism.
