Kremlin critic Yashin sentenced to long prison term

Moscow Russian opposition politician Ilya Yashin has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison for spreading “false information” about the armed forces. A court found the 39-year-old guilty on Friday.

The prosecution had asked for a sentence of nine years in prison. Yashin is a local politician of the “Solidarity Movement” in Moscow and is calling for the resignation of the president Wladimir Putin. The war of aggression against Ukraine he has repeatedly criticized.

The subject of the proceedings was a YouTube video by Yashin that was published in April. It addressed the alleged war crimes committed by Russian troops during the occupation of Bucha near Kyiv.

After the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, in Russia enacted a law criminalizing the dissemination of “false information” about the military and carrying a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.

In his closing remarks in court this week, Yashin appealed directly to Putin to “stop this madness,” referring to the war in Ukraine. The President is the person “responsible for this slaughter”.
