Kevin Spacey fined $31 million – Kultur
Kevin Spacey’s lawyers tried to appeal the decision, but now the actor has been ordered to pay MRC, the production company behind the Netflix series House of Cards, $31 million. A higher court in Los Angeles on Thursday confirmed a corresponding decision by a US arbitral tribunal from 2020.
Spacey’s role on the series was dropped when allegations of sexual assault against him emerged in 2017. MRC then sued the actor, citing behavioral guidelines in the contract. These stipulated that rules against harassment in the workplace should be observed. “In interactions with five crew members,” according to MRC, Spacey did not stick to according to court documents. His lawyers objected that the actor merely “engaged in a pervasive culture of sexual innuendos, jokes and mischief.”
The sixth season of the successful series had to be rewritten and shortened
MRC attributed the millions to costs and lost revenue as a result of Netflix’s decision to scrap Spacey’s role in the series. The sixth season of the successful series had to be rewritten and shortened, two episodes already in production were thrown away.
Spacey has not yet been convicted. A criminal case in the US state of Massachusetts alleging sexual assault was dropped in 2019 after the alleged opera refused to testify. Another criminal case against him is currently underway in London.
