Er wants to go for ireland Euro Vision Song Contest (ESC), although he finds the event “very terrible” and “disgusting”. John Lydon said Tuesday on RTÉ Radio 1’s Drivetime radio show.
Lydon, once known as Johnny Rotten and lead singer of the punk band Sex Pistols, is among the six finalists in the Irish Prelim. The 66-year-old London-born artist claims that he has never looked at the ESC. “I’m a songwriter. I sing live.” On the other hand, he calls the ESC wrong because the music comes from tape. “We may get an opportunity to change that.”
The ESC sings live, but there are no musicians on stage. Lydon, who is competing with his rock band Public Image Ltd, formed in 1978, will do so for Ireland moving into the final in Liverpool in May will certainly not change anything. When asked about it, Lydon said he might have to do some kind of karaoke.
The knighted singer is applying for participation with the self-penned song “Hawaii”, a love song to his wife Nora, to whom he has been married for more than 40 years and who suffers from Alzheimer’s.
