The outgoing HPI boss on the future of artificial intelligence, the internet – and his own plans.
CChristoph Meinel is one of the most important German computer scientists, IT professor in Potsdam and head of the Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) – still. Because at the end of March he will stop in this position, which he once took up in 2004. In the podcast he talks about the most important trends in computer science, right at the top: artificial intelligence. What can new voice systems like ChatGPT do? Do you really understand what you write? How is it different from the way we humans think? And what will become of the Internet when such AI systems become more widespread?
Meinel, who was honored for his contribution to the further development of the Internet protocol standard, explains the technological and social consequences – not least for our energy consumption. And he reveals that he is far from thinking about retiring: He has long been planning a digital university where people around the world can study computer science and get degrees.
