mountain view Google has opened access to its AI chatbot Bard to a limited public. “It’s an early experiment that allows users to collaborate with generative AI,” Google executives Sissie Hsiao (vice president of product) and Eli Collins (vice president of research) wrote in a blog post on Tuesday.
“We’ve already learned a lot from testing Bard, and the next important step for improvement is to get feedback from more people,” it said. The beta test is initially only for users from the USA and UK accessible.
With Bard, Google is competing against ChatGPT from the Californian start-up OpenAI, which in turn works closely with the software group through billions in investments Microsoft is connected. ChatGPT has been making waves since its release and strongly draws public attention to the topic of artificial intelligence.
Google has been in a leading position in AI research for years, but had not dared to open the systems to external access until now.
Similar to ChatGPT, Bard is based on a Large Research Language Model (LLM). OpenAI works with GPT, currently in version 4. At Google, Bard runs on a slimmed down and optimized version of the LaMDA language model and is scheduled to be updated with newer, more powerful models over time.
Interested parties can register immediately at the web address bard.google.com. However, users from Germany can only see the information that the system is not yet available in this country.
Hsiao and Collins continue to write that Bard is a direct interface to a large language model. “We see it as a complement to Google search.” Bard is designed in such a way that you can easily call up the search to check the answers or sources in the Internet to explore.

If you click on “Google it” you can see suggestions for search queries. Search opens in a new tab so you can find relevant results and dig deeper.
The two Google executives promised to continue improving Bard and adding new features, including coding, more languages, and multimodal experiences. “And one thing is certain: we will learn together with you as we work. With your feedback, Bard will keep getting better and better.”
