Germany supports Poland in air defense

Berlin Germany will provide air defense support to Poland after the missile incident on the Ukrainian border. Both sides have agreed to send Patriot air defense systems to Poland and to support the protection of Polish airspace with Eurofighters as part of so-called air policing, said Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) after talks with her Polish counterpart Mariusz Blaszczak. Details would now be worked out by the experts.

Last week Two people were killed by a rocket in the Polish village of Przewodow near the Ukrainian border. Western experts believe the missile was a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile used to defend against Russian military attacks.

The Polish airspace is now to be additionally protected by Patriot missile defense systems. Shortly after the start of the Ukraine war, the armed forces has already relocated material and personnel for two Patriot squadrons to Slovakia.

The system has a range of around 68 kilometers and can engage up to five targets such as aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles or cruise missiles at the same time. A system consists of a fire control station, a multifunction radar device, a generator set, a launch device with four or eight guided missiles and a radio relay squad.

Germany has also offered to take over patrol flights in Polish airspace with Eurofighter aircraft. Since 2014 the armed forces the three Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania in so-called air policing. The machines can also operate from German bases for airspace surveillance in Poland.

“Poland is our friend, ally and neighbor Ukraine particularly exposed,” Lambrecht explained the German support. The other votes were taken together with the Nato and bilateral.
