EA delegation of French parliamentarians paid a visit to Taiwan arrived. It is the largest visit by a European delegation to the island since China’s sweeping military maneuvers in August. Taiwan, for its part, held military drills using live ammunition on Wednesday. These exercises took place on a strategically important island that lies between the coast of the main island of Taiwan and mainland China.
The delegation of five French parliamentarians was led by Senator Cyril Pellavat, the Foreign Ministry in Taipei said. It was therefore the fourth visit by French representatives within a year.
China regards Taiwan as a breakaway territory that should be reunited with the mainland – if necessary by military means. At the beginning of August, the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, visited Taiwan, sparking Beijing’s ire. China responded with week-long maneuvers near Taiwan – the largest Chinese maneuvers since the mid-1990s.
