The former leader of the Left holds the USA and NATO jointly responsible for the Russian war of aggression. And shares against German politics: Lafontaine describes the Greens as “warmongers”.
The former Left boss Oscar Lafontaine blamed the US and NATO for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
Russia’s security interests have been consistently ignored, Lafontaine told the newspaper “Junge Welt” in an interview. “We have long been in a phase in which Russia and China have been militarily separated from the USA be encircled,” Lafontaine told the newspaper.

Lafontaine: Greens are “warmongers”
On February 24, after months of troop deployment, Russia was in the Ukraine invaded. The country attacked is not a member of NATO, and there are no NATO missiles stationed there either.
Regarding the Russian attack on Ukraine, Lafontaine said: “I condemn this war just as I condemn unreservedly all other wars that violate international law.” But he also accused US President Joe Biden of a “war of attrition beginning” through billions in aid to Ukraine. The US didn’t want peace, they wanted their rival to be weakened Russia.
Lafontaine, who himself was SPD leader at times in the past, described the federal government under Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) as “loyal vassals of the USA”, and the Greens as “warmongers”. He accused parts of his former party, Die Linke, of steering a course similar to that of the SPD and the Greens.
After leaving the SPD, Lafontaine was a co-founder of the Left Party, but also left this party in protest in the spring.
