Foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia and Iran plan to meet soon
Berlin After the approach of Saudi Arabia and the Iran A face-to-face meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries is planned for the coming weeks. Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud and Hussein Amirabdollahian spoke on the phone for the second time in a few days and agreed to meet during the current fasting month of Ramadan, the Saudi Arabian state news agency SPA reported on Monday. Ramadan started a few days ago and ends on April 21st.
Earlier this month, the two arch-rivals agreed to resume diplomatic ties that had been severed seven years ago. The agreement came about through the mediation of China.
Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran in 2016 after the kingdom’s embassy in Tehran was stormed during a row between the two countries over the execution of a Shia cleric in Saudi Arabia.
Iran sees itself as the protective power of the Shiites, while Saudi Arabia claims this role for the Sunnis. Iran and Saudi Arabia support different sides in conflicts that have plagued the region for years, most notably the civil wars in Yemen and Syria.
Saudi Arabia, which now also maintains diplomatic relations with Israel, has always sharply criticized Iran for its nuclear program.
