Berlin Last week, the Federal Research Ministry reported concerns about the sale of chip production by the Dortmund-based company Elmos (Semiconductor GmbH). This emerges from a letter dated November 3, which is available to the Handelsblatt.

Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) writes in the letter to Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck (Greens): “In this specific case, we see a concrete potential risk of know-how transfer due to the buyer structure.”

In addition, the company plans to continue research cooperation with a non-university research institute. There is therefore a risk that additional knowledge will be acquired by Sai Electronics. Against this background, a ban seems sensible.

As the Handelsblatt learned from government circles, the federal government is again prohibiting the takeover. In the letter, Stark-Watzinger urges the cabinet to deal with the matter, as was done on Wednesday. “No matter how careful the examination procedure, it cannot replace the political assessment of company acquisitions or investments by Chinese actors or state-owned companies,” writes the FDP politician.
