FC Bayern: Lucas Hernández is out for weeks – Sport

Lucas Hernández actually just did what he always does: he threw himself into these scenes with everything he had: his body, his fighting spirit, his passion. That was the case in the 50th minute, in the penalty area Barcelona FC, when the Spaniards apparently did not expect that the French defender would jump into the corner kick kicked by Joshua Kimmich. Relatively unchallenged, Hernández headed the ball into the net to take a 1-0 lead, which turned the course of this Champions League group game upside down and was decisive for FC Bayern's subsequent 2-0 win. And in the third minute of added time, Hernández gave it his all: with a lunge, he braced himself in Franck Kessié's path and tried to push him off the sidelines, just to avoid allowing any more dangerous crosses.

After the first scene, Hernández crawled across the lawn, got up, ran to the corner flag and was cheered. After the second he grabbed his adductors, collapsed and lay on the grass. The strange story of the 26-year-old since moving to Munich in the summer of 2019 was packed quite impressively into two short sequences. On Wednesday, the club confirmed what was to be feared immediately after Hernández's last action: a torn muscle bundle in the adductor area, the defender will be out for weeks.

With a fee of 80 million euros Lucas Hernandez still the most expensive Bundesliga purchase in history, a sum that lingered behind him for a long time. If he weren't this guy, who the team-mates know very well, would stand in the way of anything and everyone without hesitation in order to defend his own goal and thus our joint success, a guy who is in the dressing room and on the pitch arrives with his positive nature - probably his move would have caused much more unrest in the squad. At that time, when he arrived with a serious knee injury, injured himself again, then when one of the top earners was a temporary left-back instead of defense chief and was therefore suitable for constant accusations against sports director Hasan Salihamidzic.

This time is long gone. Before the duel with Barça, coach Julian Nagelsmann had only asked himself who should play next to Hernández in central defense and limit Robert Lewandowski's circles: Dayot Upamecano or Matthijs de Ligt. He chooses the former. Actually, de Ligt was brought in in the summer to give the defense more structure as a communicative organizer, but Hernández was last set in the center of defense, and not just because of his stronger left foot. Through consistently good performances, he has grown into the role of a leader himself.

For the time being, de Ligt will probably take over the job as defense chief

Munich's defenders were lucky on a number of occasions against Barcelona, creating plenty of chances, particularly in the first half, and when Alphonso Davies struck former Dortmund's Ousmane Dembélé in the penalty area, no one should have complained about a penalty either. Nevertheless, the defense in particular received a lot of praise after the game. Leroy Sané, scorer of the 2-0 (54th), found: "Luca and Upa played outstandingly and won almost every duel." The problem with the shaky first half was "that we didn't really help our defense with the offensive". And goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who himself had made some key contributions to the win, rated the performance of the central defenders as "crucial", they "threw themselves in everywhere". It's just that Hernández doesn't always come out safely from everything he bravely throws himself into.

For the time being, de Ligt will take over the job as head of defence, and for a brief moment on Tuesday evening there were fears that he could be quite lonely. Because while the colleagues were still praising the central defense, Upamecano hobbled through the mixed zone with a bandaged knee. Benjamin Pavard was also substituted early in the game (and convincingly replaced by Noussair Mazraoui) because he felt dazed after a collision. So two more failures in defense? After Kingsley Coman, the French number two, three and four? At least for Pavard and Upamecano, FC Bayern gave the all-clear on Wednesday. Both should return to training in the next few days.
