Farewell to Hartz IV: Bundestag votes for citizen money

Dhe Bundestag approved the conversion of the Hartz IV basic security into a citizen money decided. On Thursday, 385 MPs voted in favor of the draft law of the traffic light coalition of SPD, Greens and FDP with 261 votes against and 33 abstentions, as announced by Deputy President of the Bundestag Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Greens).

This replaces the unemployment benefit II introduced in 2005 with a citizen’s benefit. Of the Federal Council However, it still has to agree and will discuss this at a special meeting on Monday. Since the Union does not want to support essential parts of the reform, the government is preparing for a mediation procedure between the Bundestag and Bundesrat. Minister of Labor Hubertus Heil (SPD) expressed the hope that an accelerated procedure could still bring it into force at the beginning of the year.

The reform also provides for a significant increase in monthly payments. A single adult should in future receive 502 euros a month for living expenses and thus 53 euros more. The increase in the standard rates had previously been decided by the Bundestag in a separate vote with 681 yes and no votes with two abstentions.

The Federal Employment Agency (BA) has warned that the timely payment of the increase at the beginning of the year cannot be guaranteed if it does not have clarity by the end of November as to whether the Bundesrat will also agree. According to the BA, around 5.33 million adults and children were entitled to Hartz IV payments in October. This also includes refugees from Ukraine.
