European Athletics Championships – 2026 for the first time in Great Britain – Sport

The European Athletics Championships will be held in Birmingham in 2026, the first time in Great Britain. This was decided by the continental association European Athletics on Friday at its congress in Warsaw. Birmingham prevailed against competitor Budapest, which, according to British media reports, had apparently withdrawn its application. The Hungarian capital will be the venue for the World Championships next year. Birmingham, the second largest English city, has some experience of hosting major athletics events. The World Indoor Championships took place in the West Midlands region in 2003 and 2018, and the European Indoor Championships in 2007. In addition, Birmingham is the scene of a Diamond League meeting. The next host of the European Championship is Rome 2024 (June 7th to 12th) shortly before the Olympic Games in Paris. In 2022 the EM took place as part of the European Championships in Munich. According to the athletes’ decision for Birmingham, the European Championships 2026 should take place without the core sport – the championship management had recently announced that they wanted to organize the format with seven to ten sports in a “leading European city”.
