Manheim The economic expectations of financial experts in Germany improved much more than expected in January. The mood barometer of the Mannheim research institute ZEW rose by 40.2 points to 16.9 points compared to the previous month Center for European Economic Research (ZEW) announced on Tuesday in Mannheim.
For the first time since February 2022, the indicator is back in positive territory. It is the fourth increase in a row. On average, analysts had expected a less clear improvement in expectations to minus 15.0 points.
“You signal for the first time since February 2022, i.e. the month in which the Ukraine war began, a noticeable improvement in the economic situation over the next six months,” commented ZEW President Achim Wambach on the data. “The more favorable situation on the energy markets and the federal government’s energy price brakes have contributed to this.” In addition, the export opportunities for the German economy have improved as a result of the lifting of the Covid restrictions in China.
the Evaluation of the current economic situation however, brightened only slightly. It rose by 2.8 points to minus 58.6 points. Here minus 57.0 points had been expected.
