Death of a guest worker – Fifa “deeply saddened” – Sport
World Cup hosts Qatar are investigating the death of a migrant worker who is said to have died during the tournament. “Should the investigation conclude that safety protocols have not been followed, the company will be prosecuted and face substantial fines,” a Qatari government official told AFP. The online portal The Athletic had previously reported on the death of the man from the Philippines. According to this, the worker fell from a platform that had been lifted by a forklift truck during the group stage in the Saudi Arabian quarter. Fifa said it was “deeply saddened by this tragedy”. Of the 2.9 million residents of Qatar, more than 2.5 million are migrant workers. Their working conditions were heavily criticized. In November, Qatari authorities said 414 migrant workers had died in accidents at work in the country between 2014 and 2020.
