Minister of Finance Christian Lindner tried to bury the unpleasant topic quickly. The debate about conscription is a “ghost discussion,” said the FDP politician in the middle of last week, and he argued not only in terms of defense but also in terms of labor market policy. Lindner referred to the serious shortage of workers in Germany. He said: “Keeping an entire class away from education and work would cause great harm.”
