Chris Potter in Munich: When the synapses fire – culture

From

Artur Rubinstein once coined the term “Elephant Concerto”, which demands extremes from the soloist. What the saxophonist Chris Potter delivered with his quartet in Munich’s Unterfahrt on Wednesday was such a high degree of fullness and perfection. So overwhelming, it’s like having just heard Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the emotional pressure of a gospel church service. When Potter takes off from a theme and into improvisation, one cannot shake the suspicion that synapses are firing at a rate not previously foreseen by evolution.
