Former US President donald trump and his attorney have been fined more than $900,000 for filing a lawsuit against Hillary Clinton and other Democrats. That’s what Donald Middlebrooks, a district judge in a court in the US state of Florida, decided on Thursday.
In his March 2022 lawsuit, Republican Trump accused Clinton, his rival in the 2016 US presidential election, and other Democrats viewed as political enemies, as well as then-FBI chief James Comey, of malicious conspiracy. Trump argued that their goal was to destroy his political career and life and to sway the 2016 election in favor of Clinton, according to the court document. Middlebrooks dismissed the lawsuit in September. Now the sentence has been announced – some time later, as is usual in the US judicial system.
Trump and his lawyers filed the lawsuit solely for political purposes and thus abused the judiciary, the judge writes in his verdict. Middlebrooks believes that the resources of the judiciary are needed for people who have actually been wronged.
The verdict comes as a clear reprimand for Trump, commented on the New York Times. Because the real estate mogul, who has long used courts as a weapon against rivals, has hardly felt the consequences so far. Trump wants to run again as a Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential election.
