Bayern basketball players against Alba: bankruptcy comes seconds before the end – sport
The starting position before the basketball duel between FC Bayern Munich and Alba Berlin, which 6,500 spectators watched in the sold-out Audi Dome on Sunday evening, was diffuse, as is so often the case with this encounter. Last but not least, the strongest offensive in the Bundesliga (Berlin) met the best defense (Munich). With eleven wins, Alba was level with Bayern, who had lost two games and Berlin only one. In addition, the club from the capital had won the last five duels in Munich. On the other hand, Bayern were undefeated in the national competition at home this season, and in the Euroleague they had beaten Alba in Berlin 79:77.
However, the Munich side are now rid of their home reputation: They gave up the game in the third and fourth quarters and lost to Berlin by a hair’s breadth with 79:80 (44:44) points.
Bayern coach Andrea Trinchieri, without Corey Walden, Andreas Obst and captain Vladimir Lucic, wanted his side to play aggressively and it paid off in the opening minutes. Bayern were ahead 19:9, Berlin’s defense was unable to parry the three-pointer Nick Weiler-Babb and Cassius Winston.
Othello Hunter’s spectacular dunking gives Munich a small lead
But the quite comfortable lead was not to remain – at the end of the first quarter it had shrunk to four points. Shortly before half-time it was 40:40, Othello Hunter’s spectacular dunking at least gave Munich a small lead, which they didn’t save at the break (44:44).
After that Alba took over more and more control, for the first time since the 0:2 at the beginning of the game Bayern were behind again (46:51). Berlin had already traveled to the south of the republic with the necessary self-confidence: in Villeurbanne and on Thursday at home against Saski Baskonia, they had finally achieved surprising victories in the Euroleague, where they are last.
It was now a head-to-head race, Munich’s Cassius Winston, already the best scorer of the game (20 points), defended himself against the impending defeat with a score of 65:68 with five points in a row, but later he missed two eminently important free throws. Augustine Rubit also missed the basket from the line. Because Nick Weiler-Babb hit a three, the Munich team equalized anyway, 12.6 seconds before the end it was 79:79. Berlin international Johannes Thiemann then trembled one of two free throws to win through the mesh.
