The premiere year of national coach Herbert is about to be crowned with the first medal since 2005. The veteran had to struggle with various setbacks.

The three-year plan of the national basketball coach Gordon Herbert could experience a medal crowning that has been missing for 17 years in the first summer. In the game for third place against Poland this Sunday (5:15 p.m. / RTL and Magentasport) bronze is possible.

For the next few years, too, sees the team around captain Dennis Schroeder and young star Franz Wagner are promising, and the Herbert team could also be among the contenders for the medals at the 2023 World Championships in Asia and at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. The first year of the 63-year-old coach was not always smooth.

false start against Estonia:

The first game with Herbert on the sidelines went terribly wrong. The 66:69 against outsiders Estonia in the World Cup Qualification in Nuremberg came as a surprise despite major personnel concerns. Initial concerns about the ticket for the 2023 World Cup spread, but then Germany won all five other games in the preliminary round group, and qualification is now almost complete.

Cancellations in July:

Even before the tournament, Herbert was struggling with a number of cancellations. Moritz Wagner was injured, and Isaiah Hartenstein and Maximilian Kleber were also not available for the summer of the European Championship. It was all the more important that center Daniel Theis got over his knee problems before the start of the tournament and was able to play. The stars of the team were the NBA pros Schröder and Franz Wagner into the tournament.

Victory over the European Champion:

A boost for the euphoria before the home tournament was four days before the start of the clear victory over European champions Slovenia with Luka Doncic. At 90:71 in Munich, Schröder and Co. indicated their potential and also limited Dallas star Doncic.

Inspiring EM evenings:

Clear victory over France, successful crime with two overtimes against the Lithuanians and a big surprise against Giannis Antetokounmpo and his Greeks. Basketball Germany experienced inspiring evenings at the European Championships. The halls in Cologne and Berlin were full, from the quarter-finals RTL presented the games at prime time on free TV.

Dampener against Spain:

The first European Championship final since 2005 was within reach, but the German team lost a ten-point lead against Spain around veteran Rudy Fernandez in the final quarter. Before the eyes of Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens), the next courageous appearance by Schröder and Co. was not rewarded. Now there is a chance for bronze against Poland.
