World number one Iga Swiatek missed the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

The world number one Iga Swiatek has at the Australian Open missed out on reaching the quarter-finals in Melbourne.

The Polish tennis player lost her round of 16 duel on Sunday against Wimbledon winner Jelena Rybakina from Kazakhstan 4: 6, 4: 6. In the three previous rounds, Swiatek (21) hadn’t dropped a single set and defeated Dortmund’s Jule Niemeier at the start.

Born in Russia, Rybakina was the first player to reach the quarterfinals of the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. That’s how far the 23-year-old was at the hard court tournament Melbourne Park never came. In the round of the top eight players, Rybakina meets Jelena Ostapenko from Latvia, who also defeated young US star Coco Gauff 7:5, 6:3 on Sunday.
