Tennis star Angelique Kerber has canceled her participation in the US Open. The reason couldn’t be better: she is expecting her first child.

“For the best possible reason” in the world, German tennis star Angelique Kerber (34) canceled his participation in the US Open (August 29 to September 11). The 34-year-old is expecting her first child as she revealed in an Instagram post. Although she really wanted to play the US Open, she came to the conclusion “that two against one was simply unfair”.

For the coming months she will therefore take a break from “traveling around the world as a tennis player”. The fact that the announcement was made as part of the US Open doesn’t feel like a coincidence to her: “New York has often been a turning point in my career and in a way it seems to be the same this year.”

“Excited and nervous at the same time”

In 2011 she celebrated her comeback there, and five years later she rose to the top of the world rankings with her triumph. In 2018 she was finally able to be crowned the first German winner since Steffi Graf (53) 22 years earlier in Wimbledon after beating Serena Williams (40).

“Being a professional athlete means everything to me,” she says Kerber close to how difficult it must have been for her to cancel. “But I’m grateful for the new path I’m taking now. To be honest, I’m excited and nervous at the same time,” she lets her “Team Angie” know on Instagram.
