Ajax Amsterdam: No championship celebration for women because of the men’s failure – sport

In view of the mixed season of the men’s team, the Dutch football top club Ajax Amsterdam declined a public tribute to his wives after the city won the championship. It is not the moment for such a celebration, said the Ajax management around former national goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar in the daily newspaper Het Parol with.

An Ajax spokesman spoke of a lack of celebration in the club. In addition, one fears a low fan interest, since the women’s team had already won the title at the beginning of May. A spokesman for the city said that the Ajax management had asked the city administration to forego the award. The men missed out on the championship by a wide margin, with Ajax third in the Eredivisie with one matchday remaining.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema had invited the Ajax women to a reception in front of fans on the Leidschenplein in the center of the capital next Monday, where the men’s celebrations had taken place for years. However, after numerous violent incidents caused by rampaging fans, the men’s team can no longer be celebrated in the city centre.

FC Bayern is still hoping for two titles

In Germany, FC Bayern could also have the scenario that women win the title but not men. There should be a celebration, even if only one of the two teams is successful. “We keep our fingers crossed for our men and women and then hope for a big celebration together with the fans, whether with one or two teams – preferably with everyone together, of course,” said club president Herbert Hainer.

Coach Thomas Tuchel’s men’s team must win in Cologne and hope for a slip-up by Borussia Dortmund against FSV Mainz 05. The women have it in their own hands with their own win against relegated Turbine Potsdam. This game will be broadcast on a screen at Marienplatz on Sunday (2 p.m.). From 5.30 p.m. the championship celebration would take place.

In 2015 and 2016, the men’s and women’s teams from FC Bayern stood together on the balcony of the town hall with their respective championship trophies to celebrate with the fans. In 2021, when both teams also won the title, the joint party had to be canceled due to the corona.
