Afghanistan – Education Activist Arrested – Politics

A well-known activist for girls’ education has been arrested by the Taliban in the Afghan capital Kabul. This was announced by the UN mission Afghanistan (Unama) on Twitter on Tuesday. She also called on the ruling Islamist Taliban to share information on Matiullah Wesa’s whereabouts. As chairman of the PenPath organization, Wesa has campaigned for the education of girls, particularly in remote parts of his country, since 2009. The 30-year-old activist from Kandahar in southern Afghanistan has recently repeatedly openly called on the Taliban to reopen secondary schools for girls. Wesa’s work had been known to the public for years. He regularly reported on his activities and those of his organization on social media. It is unclear why the arrest was made now. The Taliban themselves have not yet commented on this.
